Project Overview:
The Karara mine, located in the Midwest Region of Western Australia, is one of only two magnetite operations in the state and produces a high-grade (66–68% Fe) magnetite concentrate at a design production rate of 8 million tonnes per annum. To extend the operational life of the site, Karara Mining implemented a significant asset integrity program, engaging Altrad to develop and execute a comprehensive corrosion remediation strategy. The program includes performing works during normal operations and scheduling additional activities during plant shutdowns, ensuring minimal disruption.
Scope:
- Blast and paint services with associated scaffolding for structural steel remediation.
- Asset condition surveys of structural components.
- Development of detailed asset integrity reports.
Advantages:
- Collaborative approach to align with Karara’s needs.
- Implementation of innovative coatings, such as Humidur, to improve efficiency and durability.
- Deployment of Rope Access Technicians with dual competency in blasting and painting.
- Utilisation of QA-QC technicians to ensure accurate steel thickness tests via ultrasonic thickness gauges.
