Project Overview:
The Bannockburn Pipeline project involved the design, procurement, construction, and commissioning of a 37 km water pipeline and two pumping stations connecting the Bannockburn Bore Fields to the Thunderbox Processing Plant. The infrastructure provides Saracen Minerals with a sustainable water supply of 63 L/s. The pumping stations included power generation systems and a containerised MCC with solar backup for telemetry and controls. Altrad (formerly Valmec) delivered the project, overcoming significant logistical and environmental challenges.
Scope:
Altrad’s scope of work included:
- Detailed design, procurement, and construction of the pipeline and pumping stations.
- Land clearing, earthworks, civil, structural, mechanical, piping, electrical, and instrumentation (SMPE&I), and controls.
- Commissioning of the pipeline and pumping stations.
- Delivered a sustainable water supply infrastructure capable of supporting 63 L/s flow.
- Logistics: Deployed two civil and pipe-laying crews working from opposite ends of the pipeline to meet timeframes.
- Access Constraints: Managed single-road access during the pipeline installation phase, implementing efficient traffic flow and pipe delivery plans.
- Environmental Factors: Overcame challenges posed by rocky terrain and widespread flooding due to heavy rains, maintaining project timelines through adaptive resource management.
- Completed the project within the 20-week schedule despite logistical and environmental challenges.
- Demonstrated flexibility and adaptability, accommodating changes in the pipeline route and pumping station locations.
