Project Overview:
The Fairview field, operated by Santos in Queensland’s Surat and Bowen Basins, includes four compression facilities with a total capacity of approximately 588 TJ per day. To minimise downtime, Santos had prepared a “spare” Waukesha P9390GSI engine for rapid replacement at the CS2 facility. Altrad (formerly Valmec) was engaged to execute the engine installation and overhaul an Ariel JGK-4 compressor, ensuring continuity in production while maintaining high safety and quality standards.
Scope:
- Installation and commissioning of a zero-hour rebuilt Waukesha P9390GSI reciprocating gas engine.
- Major overhaul of an Ariel JGK-4 reciprocating gas compressor.
Outcomes:
- Completed the project within the 10-day schedule, significantly reducing potential downtime compared to traditional methods.
- Conducted all works within the scheduled timeframe and budget, with zero incidents.
- Simultaneous execution of the engine replacement and compressor overhaul to minimise downtime required precise planning and coordination.
- Removal and reinstallation of the facility’s roof to facilitate engine lifting during ongoing works.
- Strict adherence to heat stress and fatigue management plans, as the work was conducted in extreme temperatures exceeding 40°C.
- Reinforced Altrad’s capability to deliver critical maintenance projects efficiently and safely under challenging conditions.
- Ensured production continuity for Santos, supporting its LNG supply chain.
