Gruyere Power Station Extension – Gas Gen & BESS

Project Overview:

The Gruyere Power Station Extension at the Gruyere Gold Mine, located in the Yamarna Greenstone Belt, aimed to increase the facility’s capacity to 39 MW. This brownfield project added a gas-fired Jenbacher 624 engine/generator skid and integrated a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) to support operations. Altrad (formerly Valmec) provided comprehensive installation and integration services, leveraging its expertise in working within constrained footprints and interfacing with third-party contractors.

Scope:

  • Installation of a gas-fired Jenbacher 624 engine/generator skid.
  • Ancillary equipment to support one engine and tie it into existing piping and electrical systems.
  • Provision for future gas generator equipment within the engine hall expansion.
  • High-voltage (HV) cable terminations and VLF testing.
  • Installation of two BESS units (2 MW / 2.5 MWh capacity).
  • Integration of a fibre optic network for enhanced operational connectivity.

Outcomes:

  • Increased the Gruyere Power Station’s capacity to meet operational demands.
  • Successfully executed work within a limited footprint, ensuring seamless coordination with third-party contractors.
  • Delivered high-quality construction, including HV cable terminations and BESS integration, supporting long-term operational reliability.
  • Utilised local suppliers for concrete, coatings, and off-site manufacturing, contributing to regional economic growth.
  • Reinforced Altrad’s ability to manage complex brownfield projects in remote locations with operational efficiency and flexibility.
