Project Overview:
The DBS Haul Road Realignment project was initiated to accommodate a mine site expansion at Newmont’s Tanami operations. This realignment enabled a flattened road grade, improving cycle times between the pit and the processing plant. The project scope included bitumen sealing, line marking, and road furniture installation for triple road trains. Service conduits were also installed for future expansion requirements.
Scope:
Altrad’s scope of work included:
- Construction of a 2 km haul road.
- Shifting 202,000 tonnes of bulk and detailed earthworks.
- Importing 39 million liters of construction water.
- Utilising 230,000 liters of diesel for construction equipment.
- Installation of electrical and service conduits along the road.
Outcomes:
- Delivered the project with zero quality non-conformance reports (NCRs) and no failed compaction results after over 250 tests.
- Remote Location: The project’s site, located 560 km from Alice Springs, required extensive upfront planning and contingency measures to mitigate potential downtime.
- Water Restrictions: Managed restricted free-issued water from the client to maintain production rates and avoid project delays.
- Completed all works without a single injury to employees or subcontractors.
- Achieved 3% Indigenous employment and raised $3,000 for the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) through site initiatives.
